Our Spiritual Tradition

Paramhansa YoganandaParamhansa Yogananda

The inspiration behind Ananda is Paramhansa Yogananda, the first great Indian master to live most of his life in the Western world. His love, depth, and universality have inspired millions. He became famous through his Autobiography of a Yogi, first published in 1946. Yogananda’s teachings are highly practical, his meditation techniques effective and based on scientific principles, and his approach to spirituality is permeated with both devotion and wisdom.

Yogananda emphasized the universality of religion. The inner essence of all religions, he said, is one and the same: the way to union with the Infinite, known as “Self-realization.” Self-realization, Yogananda said, will be the religion of the future!

Yogananda’s direct disciple, Swami Kriyananda, has made Yogananda’s dream of “world brotherhood communities” a reality. The Master often told him, “You have a great work to do.” With that blessing behind him, he has dedicated his life to ceaseless service. Kriyananda has done more than found a successful spiritual community: He has given thousands of talks all over the globe, has written over 70 books and has composed over 400 musical pieces, many dedicated to particular cultures of the world. He is currently establishing new centers and communities in India.

Self-realization is the eternal message of religion. Whatever your beliefs and practices, the essential purpose of religion is to help you to fulfill your own highest potential, as a child of God. . . . Your religion is not the garb you wear outwardly, but the garment of light you weave around your heart.
—Paramhansa Yogananda, The Essence of Self-Realization
