Kerala — “God’s Own Country”

Kerala is called “God’s own country,” and it well deserves this epithet. It is in the southwestern part of India on the Arabian Sea. With its long stretches of white sandy beaches, its clean waters, beautiful and abundant coconut palms and tropical flowers, its back-water lakes and extensive canals, its highly-developed and intricate architectural style, and its temperate climate, Kerala is the ideal setting for deep relaxation and rejuvenation.

The People of Kerala

Most of the people in Kerala live in small cities and villages. There is far less pollution than in other regions, and much tranquility. The pace of life is calm and relaxed. The people of Kerala are warm and friendly, open-hearted and simple.

Culture and Education

Kerala is also known for its culture and emphasis on education. It claims the highest literacy rate in the world: 100%! They have excellent schools and many universities and institutes of higher education.

Ayurveda

Ayurvedic medicine has been highly developed in Kerala since ancient times, and it is widely practiced and taught. The main Ayurvedic University of India is in Trivundram, the capital city.

Art and Dance

The art and dance of Kerala are very special, and different from other parts of India. Their statues are more simply carved, but vividly colored and beautifully styled. The same musical instruments which are used throughout India are played in special ways in Kerala. And they have perfected the art of story-telling through Katha Kali performances that combine acting, dance, and music.

Kerala Architectural Style

The architectural style uses bamboo and teak wood, which used to be abundant in this region. The wood is used both for structural and decorative purposes, and is often intricately carved.

Because of the temperate climate, the structures tend to have many open spaces and natural ventilation systems that keep the interiors cool.

Round houses are typical, as are roofs thatched with bamboo.
